King Holiday Celebration
Each year the National Civil Rights Museum has commemorated the leadership, vision, beliefs, and sacrifice of life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a myriad of program offerings. In honor of the King national holiday, the Museum develops programs and activities to inspire new generations of leaders to service. On the holiday, Museum especially reaches out to young people with a message of hope and invitation to stand up, speak out, participate, and use the lessons of yesterday as tools for change today.
This annual day of service invites visitor to give back to the community through the museum’s food drive and blood drive. Give canned good items to the Mid-South Food Bank and receive $1 off the discounted King Holiday museum admission. Donate a pint of blood to LifeBlood Mid-South Regional Centers and Mobile and receive free admission for up to four people. On the holiday, food bank representative will be present at the museum to receive nonperishable food donations and the LifeBlood Mobile staff will be present to receive blood donations.
This year’s celebrated theme was “EDUCATION EQUITY: Creating A Movement in the Community.” Community participants from educational, civic and health organizations, Memphis Public libraries and Head Start program will be on hand with information. There was also a variety of entertainment and children activities including dramatic/musical performances, arts & crafts, storytelling, food vendors and door prizes. Local radio stations broadcast live from the museum and a live DJ will be on the main stage.
For the first time, the museum will hosted a social media and Skype event to engage in conversation with like-minded organizations nationally and globally about the meaning of the MLK Holiday! Join the conversation by liking the museum’s social media sites!
